Southbourne House
Meonstoke, Winchester
This project in a small rural settlement in Southern Hampshire involved the extension and remodelling of an existing traditional house, which was in a poor condition. The property was fortunate in being on a very large plot, set back from the road, with a plain but formal front elevation and flint boundary wall which is characteristic of the area.
Our proposals involved the removal of the later rear extensions and a number of outbuildings, and the addition of a substantial rear extension, together with extensive internal changes to create a large family home with a range of traditional cellular and open plan areas to suit contemporary family life. Five bedrooms were formed, two of which are en-suite.
Although not listed, the dwelling is in a Conservation Area and we held a number of discussions with the Conservation Officer who felt it was a sensitive site. By forming a good working relationship with the Conservation and Planning Officers we were able to explain the Client’s wishes and our design rationale, as well as making amendments where necessary to result in a scheme which achieved consent with the backing of these Officers.
